The design of Volcano was inspired by the active underwater volcano that lies 18 meters below sea level and raises 280 meters high from the bottom of the sea. The area is known for its hydrothermal wells, where hot water gushes up to 220ºC. The explosive history of the volcano, including the tsunami known as "The time of the Great Evil," and the creation of the "Virgin of the Good" church, served as the foundation for the design.
The architectural intention of Volcano is to redefine the characteristics of traditional Santorini architecture and incorporate them into a modern vocabulary. The facade of the building resembles an eroded shell, with the forceful winds drilling into it. The elongated shape of the residence is a result of the narrow plot, ensuring breathtaking views of the sea from every room.
The internal domes, cross-volts, and outdoor Jacuzzi, reminiscent of a church steeple, add a playful touch to the design. The construction technique of digging the mass of the residence from inside out, similar to underground houses, gives the building a sculptural form resembling a rock hurled from the volcano. The shape and form of the openings in the house were carefully considered based on the orientation and function of each room, taking into account the daily and seasonal positions of the sun.
Pieros Pieris & Stella Pieri, the talented duo behind Pieris Architects, brought their expertise to create this exceptional design. The project took place from 2012 to 2013 in Santorini, Greece, where the unique landscape and history served as the perfect backdrop for Volcano.
Volcano's innovative design and integration of traditional elements have garnered recognition in the design community. In 2013, it was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This award recognizes designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, evoking positive emotions and wonder.
